Cat Chin Acne

Featured

Chin acne is something we see a lot!

It can look like your cat’s chin is just a bit dirty.. but underneath, there’s often more going on.

Chin acne is a build-up of oils, skin cells and bacteria around the hair follicles on the chin, causing blackheads, crusts, redness, or even sore inflamed spots.
Cat chin acne is much like pimples in humans. It develops when hair follicles get clogged with excess oils, dead skin, and bacteria, creating blackheads and sometimes even swelling or pus.
Some cats barely notice it, while others can become uncomfortable.
Here's a few tips about how to care for your kitty:

  • Wash bowls daily
  • Gently clean the chin as advised by your vet team (if you want to try first - 1 tsp salt in 1 cup warm water can help and gently wipe in circles to remove the black heads).
  • Avoid picking or scrubbing - his can make it worse
  • Keep food and water bowls clean (ceramic or stainless steel bowls are often best - avoid plastic which can harbour bacteria)

Always seek veterinary advice if it’s sore, swollen, infected, or not improving.
